Skye’s Story:

Skye was found by the Cedar City animal shelter wandering around the north end of town.  She did not have a microchip or a collar and was estimated to be about 2 years old.  Skye was taken back to the shelter and put up for adoption.  We took her home and noted that she was already potty trained and leash trained, so she likely had a home before us.  We suspect Skye was abandoned by her owners and left on the street, and that this event led to separation anxiety issues.

About Skye:

  • Gets Along with Cats & Dogs

    🐕

Skye lives in a two dog household and loves seeing her friends at doggy daycare!

    🐈

She gets along great with cats and will even break up their fights!

  • The Center of Attention

    🤩

Skye craves attention and loves affection but she gets jealous when another animal is getting too much of the spotlight. She loves living with other dogs and cats but would be fine as an only child!

  • Ready for Adventure!

    🥾

Skye loves going on hikes and has even been through Peek-a-Boo and Spooky slot canyons!

  • Sit, Stay, Play Dead

    👉👉

Skye knows basic commands like Sit and Stay (but can forget them if very excited).

If you point “finger guns” at her and say pew pew she’ll even play dead.

  • Self Plays

    🥎

Skye can keep herself entertained and won’t constantly ask you to throw a ball for her.

    🦴

She needs a good supply of chew toys. We give her rubber/plastic toys as she shreds cloth/stuffed toys quickly.

  • Not Great in a Crate

    😰
Skye does not care to left in a crate alone. She prefers to be left out with a window to look out.

What Skye Needs:

Skye experiences separation anxiety when left home alone from her humans.

Unlike other dogs, Skye doesn't bark or howl, or have accidents when anxious.  She nervously paces the house and is obsessed with looking out the window facing the street.  A few times, she has chewed items in the room facing the street, although it's been awhile since she chewed anything.  She constantly paces the house and looks around for us.  When we check in via WiFi camera, she starts crying and looking for us even harder.  It's absolutely heartbreaking how upset and anxious she appears when we are gone.

Anxiety medication and weekly trips to doggie daycare help, but that is not enough for her to truly be happy and thrive.

🏡 Ideal Home:

  • Active household

  • At least one person who is consistently home - teleworker, stay-at-home parent, or retired

  • Access to a yard where she can run around and play

Why We’re Re-homing:

We have loved and cared for Skye for 2 years, and while she is stable in her current environment, she would be so much happier with her people at home and around her on a consistent basis.  When we got her from the shelter, we had no idea of her separation anxiety issues, and we have worked hard for the past couple years to address them.  We've tried and/or are currently implementing the following:

  • Dog daycare 1-3 times per week

  • Food toys & puzzles when leaving home

  • Lots of toys to provide stimulation

  • Leaving the TV on when gone

  • Checking in via Furbo camera regularly

  • Regular exercise before leaving home

  • Ignoring her when returning home

  • Consulted dog trainers

  • Calming pheromones

  • Medication when leaving home

The only thing we are not able to do is stay at home every day as neither of us have jobs that allow us to work from home.

While Skye is stable, she absolutely lives for her people, and she would be thrilled to have her people around consistently.  She deserves to have the best life possible, and not being able to provide that for her has been hard for our mental health and well being.

Adopt
Today!

Skye is currently living in Cedar City, Utah. We are willing to bring Skye to wherever she might do best, including homes out-of-state.

She will come with her harness, leash, toys, bed, food, food bin and bowl, and other accessories.

Instead of a re-homing fee, we are asking her new family to make a $100 donation to any animal shelter of their choice.

Questions & Answers:

  • We don't know many people with children, so Skye has not often been around children while we have had her.  She loves getting pets from children at the farmers market and she absolutely loves people.  Skye doesn't have great spatial awareness and she can be over enthusiastic, so it may be better for her to be in a house with children that can tolerate her bumping into them and coming into their space for kisses and love.

    • Skye will cross her paws “like a proper lady” when sitting down

    • She sleeps laying on her back

    • She has a “snaggle tooth” that’ll poke out when she does a nervous smile

    • Skye has “fancy” ears and “Grinch feet”

    • Her tail was cropped by her last owner but has long fur, so it’ll grow out into a cute “feather duster” when not trimmed

  • The shelter donation is to help make sure potential adopters are serious about providing a stable and loving environment for Skye.

We are happy to make the donation or the adopter can provide us with proof.

  • Skye is a good walker and fully leash trained.  She gets enthusiastic at the beginning of the walk and may pull a bit, but clipping her leash to the front harness attachment solves the issue.  She loves walks and is very respectful and attentive, although she may try to say hello to other walkers and dogs (she doesn't bark, she just pulls to try to say hello).  Off-leash, she does well and comes when called.
